Magnesium sulfate heptahydrate (molecular formula MgSO4.7H20), also known as bitter sulfur, bitter salt, Epsom salt, Epsom salt, is a white or colorless needle-shaped or oblique columnar crystal, odorless, cool and slightly bitter, molecular weight: 246.47, specific gravity 1.68, easily soluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol or glycerol, soluble in its crystal water at 67.5 ℃. Decomposed by heat, 70/80 ℃ is to lose four molecules of crystal water. About 200 ℃ loses all crystal water to become anhydrous. It is easy to weather into powder in the air (dry) and gradually loses crystal water when heated to become anhydrous magnesium sulfate. This product does not contain any toxic substances. Because magnesium sulfate heptahydrate is not easy to decompose, it is easier to weigh than anhydrous magnesium sulfate, which is convenient for quantitative control in industry.

Magnesium Sulfate Heptahydrate Application

1. Agricultural application: Magnesium is the core element of chlorophyll, which can strengthen the reduction process of plants, improve resistance, promote enzyme activation, make compacted soil loose and powerful, promote root development, fully absorb nutrients, and make plants more luxuriant. Sulfur is the main component of protein and enzymes in plants, promotes root growth, enhances metabolism and oxidation-reduction in plants, and thus promotes vigorous growth of crops and increases yields. Therefore, magnesium sulfate is an ideal raw material for making compound fertilizers. It can be mixed with nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium into compound fertilizers or mixed fertilizers according to different needs, and can also be mixed with one or more raw materials into various fertilizers and photosynthetic fertilizers. After field actual comparison experiments on nine crops such as rubber trees, fruit trees, tobacco leaves, tea, vegetables, potatoes, etc., magnesium-containing compound fertilizers can make crops grow 15-20% more than compound fertilizers without magnesium.

Product Knowledge: Advantages of magnesium sulfate in water treatment


Magnesium sulfate has significant advantages in water treatment, mainly reflected in its high efficiency, multifunctionality and environmental protection properties:
1. Efficiently remove heavy metal ions
Heavy metal pollution is a major problem in water treatment. Heavy metal ions such as lead, cadmium, copper, etc. can cause serious harm to human health and the environment. The magnesium ions (Mg²⁺) generated after magnesium sulfate is dissolved can form insoluble precipitates with heavy metal ions in the water. For example, magnesium sulfate can react with lead ions (Pb²⁺) in water to form lead sulfate (PbSO₄) precipitate, thereby removing lead from the water. Studies have shown that magnesium sulfate can reduce the concentration of lead ions from 50 mg/L to less than 0.1 mg/L when treating lead-containing wastewater, with a removal efficiency as high as 99.8%.
2. Improve water hardness
Excessive water hardness will lead to the formation of scale, affecting the quality of the water and the life of the equipment. The magnesium ions in magnesium sulfate can react with calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) in the water to form less soluble calcium sulfate (CaSO₄), thereby reducing the hardness of the water. In some industrial water treatment systems, by adding magnesium sulfate, the hardness of hard water can be reduced from 300 ppm (mg/L) to less than 100 ppm, significantly reducing the generation of scale and extending the service life of the equipment.
3. Promote sludge dehydration
In the sewage treatment process, sludge dewatering is a key step. Magnesium sulfate can enhance the cohesion of sludge particles, making them easier to settle and dewater. Magnesium ions combine with organic matter in the sludge to form larger flocs, which is beneficial to mechanical dehydration. In the sludge treatment experiment, after adding magnesium sulfate, the moisture content of the sludge could be reduced from 80% to about 65%, and the dehydration efficiency increased by 18.75%.
4. Improve the biodegradability of wastewater
The magnesium element in magnesium sulfate is an important nutrient for the growth of microorganisms. Magnesium is involved in the activation of many enzymes. Magnesium sulfate provides necessary magnesium ions for microorganisms in wastewater and enhances the activity of microorganisms. In biological treatment experiments, adding magnesium sulfate can reduce the chemical oxygen demand (COD) in wastewater from 500 mg/L to less than 50 mg/L, and the removal efficiency reaches 90%.
