Magnesium oxide (chemical formula: MgO) is an oxide of magnesium, an ionic compound. It is a white solid at room temperature. Magnesium oxide exists in nature in the form of periclase and is the raw material for magnesium smelting.
Magnesium oxide has high fire-resistant insulation properties. It can be transformed into crystals after high-temperature burning above 1000°C, and it becomes dead-burned magnesium oxide (also known as magnesia) or sintered magnesium oxide when it rises to 1500-2000°C.

It combines with water under certain conditions to generate magnesium hydroxide, which is slightly alkaline. The pH of the saturated aqueous solution is 10.3. It is soluble in acid and ammonium salts, but difficult to dissolve in water. Its solution is alkaline. It is insoluble in ethanol. It has strong refractive properties in the visible and near-ultraviolet light range.
Magnesite (MgCO3), dolomite (MgCO3·CaCO3) and seawater are the main raw materials for the production of magnesium oxide. Magnesium oxide is obtained by thermal decomposition of magnesite or dolomite. Magnesium hydroxide precipitate is obtained by treating seawater with slaked lime, and magnesium oxide is obtained by burning magnesium hydroxide. Magnesium chloride brine blocks obtained from the comprehensive utilization of seawater or brine after bromine extraction can also be used as raw materials, and sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate are added to generate magnesium hydroxide or basic magnesium carbonate precipitate, which is then burned to obtain magnesium oxide.

1. Calcination method: One of the most common methods for producing magnesium oxide, mainly divided into magnesite calcination method and magnesium hydroxide calcination method.
a. Magnesite calcination method: Magnesite (MgCO₃) is the main mineral raw material of magnesium oxide, which undergoes raw material processing, calcination, cooling and crushing. The advantage is that the raw materials are easy to obtain and the cost is low, but the calcination process requires high energy consumption and will produce carbon dioxide emissions, which has a certain impact on the environment.
b. Magnesium hydroxide calcination method: Mainly uses magnesium resources in seawater or bittern. 2. Precipitation method: A method of directly generating magnesium oxide through chemical reaction.

Salt precipitation method: Soluble magnesium salts (such as magnesium sulfate and magnesium chloride) are reacted with alkali to generate magnesium hydroxide precipitation, which is then converted into magnesium oxide through calcination. The production steps include dissolution and reaction, filtration and drying, and calcination.
b. Hydrothermal synthesis method: React in a high-pressure and high-temperature aqueous solution to generate nano-magnesium oxide. The production steps include reaction solution preparation, hydrothermal reaction, calcination and cooling. The hydrothermal synthesis method can produce magnesium oxide with small particle size and large specific surface area, but the equipment cost is high and it is suitable for the production of high value-added products.
3. Electrolysis method: A method of generating magnesium oxide by electrolyzing molten magnesium salt. Its production includes magnesium salt melting, electrolysis, cooling and collection. The electrolysis method can produce high-purity magnesium oxide with precise process control, but the energy consumption is high and it is mainly used for high-end applications.
